A man robbed at a gas station gave chase in his vehicle, ramming the getaway car and killing one of the accused thieves, California police say.

Officers responded to the fatal crash at 5:28 p.m. Saturday, June 29, Los Angeles police said in a news release.

Investigators discovered the 33-year-old man killed in the crash had earlier fled an armed robbery in Culver City, along with another man who ran away after the wreck, police said.

Police told KTLA the men robbed a 21-year-old driver at a gas station and fled in a white sedan. The victim chased them in his Mercedes-Benz SUV, authorities said.

The SUV driver rear-ended the sedan, causing it to crash into a light pole and killing the driver, police told KTTV.

Police told the station one or more passengers in the sedan got out and opened fire on the SUV before running away.

The incident is being investigated as a homicide but it’s unclear if the 21-year-old has been arrested or charged, KTLA reported.

Police ask anyone with information to call 323-786-5110 or leave an anonymous tip at 1-800-222-8477.
