A lurking coyote frightens a golden eagle away from snacking on a carcass in California, making the moment look like “a modern Renaissance painting, but make it nature.”

The scene was captured by The Condor Cave at the Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge in Kern County, California, according to a Jan. 24 post by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

“Can you spot the coyote creeping up in the background?” The Condor Cave said in a Facebook post.

A golden eagle stretches its wings as ravens fly around it in the “dramatic scene.” To the left of the eagle, a coyote appears to skulk in the background, waiting for its turn with the carcass.

Social media users agreed the photo looked unreal.

“Fantastic photograph! It is like a painting - the coloring, the capture of the clouds , and perfect composition,” one person posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“OMG, I thought this was photoshopped or something!!” someone commented on Facebook.

The Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge is also home to California condors, which are endangered species.
