Partial human remains were recovered after conservation workers found a bone sticking out of a jacket sleeve, according to a California sheriff’s office.

Workers with the California Waterfowl Association, a nonprofit whose “mission is to grow California’s waterfowl populations,” stumbled upon the bone “underneath vegetation growth” while surveying an area of Suisun City on Wednesday, June 28, the Solano County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release posted on Twitter.

After determining there was likely “fully decomposed human remains just below the surface,” deputies said they along with other agencies began excavating on June 29.

The sheriff’s office said it has found partial skeletal remains and the person’s identity is unknown.

The sheriff’s office said the public should avoid the area as the excavation continues.

Suisun City is 45 miles southwest of Sacramento.
