Update: Winning Powerball ticket worth over $2 billion sold in California, state lottery says

Sunday update: No one matched all six numbers in Saturday’s Powerball drawing, which means Monday’s jackpot rises to another record: $1.9 billion. Since the last winning drawing, held on Aug. 3, there have been 40 consecutive drawings without a winner.

Original story:

Check those Powerball tickets carefully, because the estimated $1.6 billion jackpot could give the lucky winner the largest prize in lottery history.

The winning numbers, drawn Saturday, Nov. 5, were 28, 45, 53, 56, 69. The Powerball number was 20.

Before Saturday night, the highest all-time jackpot of $1.586 billion in 2016, which was also Powerball. It was split three ways by winners in California, Florida and Tennessee. The second-highest-ever lottery jackpot was a $1.537 billion Mega Millions prize in 2018. A Mega Millions player in Illinois won a $1.337 billion jackpot on July 29, according to a California Lottery news release.

The estimated $1.6 jackpot would be worth just over $782 million in cash if taken in a lump sum, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association. The jackpot would be higher than the gross domestic product of 22 countries, California Lottery officials said.

That lump sum would be less after taxes — 25% is withheld by lottery officials with the winner responsible for the rest, which could surpass $300 million. Most states also tax state winnings, though 15 states including California, Florida and Texas do not. Factoring in the highest of taxes, the winner would still be swimming in cash — at least $424 million.

Don’t think you’d spend or invest the winnings wisely? Taking the annuitized payments (and factoring in taxes) would get the winner at least $13 million in the first year, sliding higher to a 30th annual payment of roughly $54 million — and a total payout after taxes of around $873 million.

Nobody hit the jackpot Wednesday evening, Nov. 2, 2022. Two California Lottery players won second-place prizes with two tickets matching five numbers worth roughly $1.044 million each. Those tickets, which were sold at an Ontario grocery story in San Bernardino County and at a Milpitas 7-Eleven store in Santa Clara County, failed to match the Powerball number.

Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C.; Puerto Rico; and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Five states — Utah, Nevada, Hawaii, Alaska and Alabama — do not have a lottery. A mix of reasons have kept them away, including objections from conservatives, concerns about the consequences for low-income families or a desire not to compete with existing gaming operations.

The contribution to education from this most recent record-breaking Powerball sequence, which started back in early August, is estimated to be about $92.7 million, according to the California Lottery. California sales for this Powerball sequence total $231.8 million through the close of Wednesday’s drawing.

California Lottery sold an estimated $5.5 million in Powerball tickets just in the final hour of sales Wednesday. The last player to win the Powerball jackpot, which was $206.9 million, was Aug. 3 in Pennsylvania.
