Meth disguised as green onions found hidden among green onions, feds say
A tractor trailer of green onions at a California border crossing also carried 1,500 pounds of methamphetamine disguised as green onions, federal authorities reported.
Inspectors discovered the hidden drugs at the Otay Mesa crossing near San Diego on Oct. 20, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers said in a news release.
The 183 packets of meth — 1,529 pounds worth — were disguised as packages of green onions “concealed deep in the middle of the pallet of the green onions,” the release said.
On Oct. 22, inspectors at the same facility found 195 packages of methamphetamine and 75 packages of cocaine behind a false wall in a different tractor trailer carrying electronics, the release said.
Both drivers were arrested.
“The lengths drug trafficking organizations are willing to go to conceal and smuggle narcotics is a testament to how effective our officers are,” said Jennifer De La O, director of field operations for the agency’s San Diego Field Office.
