No vaccine rule — for some. But other COVID restrictions apply at California airports

If you’re traveling by plane soon, you want to be cautious and see if there are any new COVID-19 guidelines at the airport.

Since we’re beginning what might be our COVID-19 winter surge, as coronavirus cases climb and the omicron variant spreads across California, there are more rules and restrictions at airports.

Those coming into the United States from another country must show proof of a negative COVID test and results must be within one day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Safety guidelines will vary depending on the airport and your airline. And remember, your end destination may have other restrictions and rules regarding COVID. California just issued a universal indoor mask mandate.

The state will also recommends those who travel in or out of California get tested for COVID within three to five days.

Before you book your flight and head in or out of California for the holidays, be sure you’re in the know.

Domestic travel

Vaccinations are recommended, according to the CDC. If you are not fully vaccinated, it is advised that you get tested one to three days before your trip.

Also, masks are required when you are inside airports, airplanes and other forms of public transportation.

International travel

Similarly, vaccinations or a viral COVID test is recommended for individuals who are traveling to another country from the U.S. Masks are required.

U.S citizens, U.S. nationals, U.S. lawful permanent residents and immigrants traveling to the U.S. must show proof of a negative COVID test, or documentation of recent recovery from COVID in the past 90 days.

Children under 2 do not need to be tested.

Travelers coming to the U.S. will also have to share their contact information for contact tracing.

Non-U.S. citizens and non-U.S. immigrants arriving to the U.S. must be fully vaccinated and are required to show a negative COVID test or documentation of recovery. You’ll also have to share contact information.

Sacramento International Airport (SMF)

SMF is following CDC and TSA safety rules.

Test and documentation requirements may also vary depending on your airline, according to SMF. You can reach out to your airline for specific information here.

Masks are required.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

SFO is following CDC guidelines as well as local and state protocols. Medical screenings before flights depend on airlines.

Masks are required.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

LAX advises that all travelers follow CDC safety guidance for traveling.

Additionally, people 16 years and older who are coming to the City of Los Angeles via LAX, Union Station or Van Nuys Airport from another state or country, have to fill out an online traveler form.

Masks are required.

Per usual, do not travel if you are sick, have tested positive for COVID or were exposed to the virus. And the CDC recommends you do not travel internationally until you are fully vaccinated.
