Watch: Gavin Newsom gives update on California wildfires, COVID at press conference

Gov. Gavin Newsom gave an update Monday on California fires and the COVID-19 pandemic at a noon press conference.

You can watch a recording of the livestream here:

He’s scheduled to speak as firefighters battle flames in Napa, Sonoma, Butte and Shasta counties that flared overnight. Spurred by dry winds, the fires have forced thousands of residents to evacuate.

The state has already been battling record fires for more than a month. The blazes have strained the state’s firefighting resources and prompted Newsom to promise new efforts to combat climate change, including an executive order to phase out sales of gas-powered cars by 2035.

On Friday, Newsom issued a an emergency proclamation for Del Norte, Los Angeles and Mendocino counties to help fight fires there. He also signed an executive order to suspend some environmental protection rules in burned areas that would interfere with debris removal after the fires.
