Wildfires in the Golden State have already scorched 2 million acres this year, a modern record. The state’s firefighting resources are already stretched too thin to thoroughly battle all the wildfires burning across the state.
Hot, dry, windy conditions threaten to spark more blazes this week. Pacific Gas and Electric Co, which supplies electricity to much of Northern California, cut power in swathes of the Sierra foothills and wine country to prevent its power lines from igniting vegetation in those areas.
Meanwhile, the coronavirus continues to infect more Californians. More than 735,000 people have tested positive since the start of the pandemic, according to the latest data from the California Department of Public Health. More than 13,700 Californians have died.
