Why fans can’t resist: Line for Disneyland’s new ‘Star Wars’ ride forms at 2 a.m.

“Star Wars” fans couldn’t resist.

They started lining up at 2 a.m. Thursday at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, ahead of the opening of the park’s Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance ride. The ride opened at 8 a.m., Friday, January 17, 2020.

Video shows the scene at 4:25 a.m. The long-awaited ride is the main attraction at the resort’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge land, which opened last year in May. Rise of the Resistance is the final piece of a 14-acre expansion at the amusement park.

The attraction is “unlike anything” else at Disneyland, according to the resort. Walt Disney Co. representatives bill it as the company’s “most technologically advanced attraction so far,” the Associated Press reported.

The ride features vehicles that run without metal tracks, holograms, animatronics, a drop-tower effect to simulate a ride in space, high-definition projection screens and pyrotechnics, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“Unlike the Disney employees on other rides who greet visitors with a smile, the attraction employs dour-faced staff to play the part of evil First Order minions,” the L.A. Times reported.

A virtual queuing system requires guests to download the Disneyland app. The app requires guests to be inside the park to join a Boarding Group, but that doesn’t guarantee a spot on the ride, which could reach capacity.
