Two from Sacramento area among 42 killed in crashes over Thanksgiving period, CHP says

Forty-two people were killed in crashes across California during the Thanksgiving holiday period, including two in the greater Sacramento area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Over 102 hours, from 6:01 p.m. Wednesday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday, CHP launched a “Maximum Enforcement Period” where every available officer was deployed in order to crack down on collisions and DUIs. More than 860 people were arrested for DUI, with 95 of those arrests in the greater Sacramento area.

Seat belts were not used in 41 percent of this year’s fatalities. Eight fatalities and 314 DUI arrests occurred within the first 30 hours of the enforcement period.

Fatalities were down 29 percent from the same enforcement period in 2018, when 59 people were killed, according to CHP. Last year 931 people were arrested for DUI.
