Humpback whales, sea lions team up in incredible feeding frenzy in Monterey Bay

Some of the best whale watching on the California coast is happening just a short drive north of San Luis Obispo.

During a recent tour with Princess Monterey Whale Watching, customers were treated to an all-out feeding frenzy between humpback whales and sea lions in Monterey Bay.

A video posted to the company’s Facebook page on Tuesday shows a group of several whales and sea lions feeding on anchovies, often working together to chase the fish.

“In a few of the clips, the food was chased to the surface and the whales exhibited lunge feeding behavior, breaking the surface of the water chasing the fish with their mouths open,” said Gina Thomas, manager of Princess Monterey Whale Watching.

Thomas said the humpback whales have been feeding in Monterey Bay for the summer and fall, and will be heading south to their breeding grounds in Mexico for the winter.
