Wolff Vineyards honored statewide for climate-smart practices
Wolff Vineyards of Edna Valley was one of three businesses statewide to receive a Business of the Year award at the CoolCalifornia Small Business Awards.
The awards, given by the California Air Resources Board, recognize small businesses that demonstrate leadership in reducing their carbon footprint, according to a news release. Specifically, they demonstrated exceptional climate change management practices and emission reductions, while documenting cost savings, return on investment and benefits received by taking the specific actions, the release said.
Jean-Pierre Wolff, owner and vintner, said that Wolff Vineyards was recognized for its holistic approach of using a broad range of practices.
Vineyard practices include installing variable speed irrigation pumps to improve pumping efficiency and cut back energy use, reducing irrigation, dry-farming old vines and natural resource management, he said.
Its winery practices include using post-consumed and compostable wine shipping trays, an LED lighting retrofit in the tasting room and a purchasing program targeting locally sourced supplies, he said.
Wolff Vineyards’ eco-friendly practices have paid off financially, Wolff said. Some payback is immediate, such as re-purposing leftover wine labels, while other practices pay off over more than five years, such as surface drainage modifications for stormwater capturing, he said.
Wolff Vineyards was honored at a ceremony in Sacramento in early March.
