Jersey Mike’s Subs sandwich shop opens in San Luis Obispo

A new Jersey Mike’s Subs opened Wednesday in San Luis Obispo — the third store in the county.

The fast-casual franchise, which sells submarine sandwiches, is owned by business partners Dan Burrell and Angel Velazquez. This is their 13th Jersey Mike’s Subs location. Ten of them are elsewhere in California; the two other local ones are in Arroyo Grande and Paso Robles. The Paso location opened Dec. 16.

Their newest eatery in San Luis Obispo is in a 1,143-square-foot space in the Marigold Shopping Center that formerly housed Froggie’s Café.

The pair thought the space was an ideal location because of the traffic the shopping center draws, as well as its close proximity to surrounding offices, Burrell said. They signed a 10-year lease.

They invested about $330,000 to open the San Luis Obispo store, Burrell said, adding that they employ 18 full- and part-time workers in the San Luis Obispo store.

To celebrate its opening, the store is having a free sub fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society. Through Sunday, customers with a select coupon will receive a free regular sub for a minimum $2 contribution to the charity. Burrell said they hope to raise around $2,000.

Although the pair has no immediate plans to open other Jersey Mike’s Subs locally, Burrell said they are open to the possibility. He expressed interest in opening a location near Cal Poly or in the Madonna Plaza Shopping Center.

The first Jersey Mike’s Subs restaurant opened in 1956 in Point Pleasant, N.J., and the company began offering franchises in 1987. There are more than 1,500 Jersey Mike’s Subs open and under development nationwide, according to the company’s website.
