Ancient Peaks Winery in Santa Margarita added a new on-site café to its recently remodeled and expanded tasting room.

The café opened gradually starting at the end of September, said Amanda Wittstrom Higgins, vice president of operations, adding that it is not a full-service café and guests order in the tasting room.

The café menu, designed in collaboration with chefs Jeff and Cheyne Jackson of The Range restaurant, includes sandwiches, salads, nuts, cheese and meats.

The menu features local ingredients, including some grown on the Santa Margarita Ranch, which is operated by the same families that own Ancient Peaks Winery.

A new kitchen and café space with bistro tables was added to the tasting room. Its expansion also included lounge-style seating and an outdoor wrap-around patio. Although the company declined to disclose square footage and investments, a news release indicated that the expansion more than doubled the square footage of the previous tasting room.

Ancient Peaks Winery is owned by the Wittstrom, Filipponi and Rossi families. The business began in 2006, and its tasting room opened in 2008.
