The Tribune's newspaper to be printed in Fresno
Starting in early June, The Tribune and The Cambrian, a weekly serving the North Coast, will be printed at their sister paper, The Fresno Bee.
The change will allow The Tribune to be printed on presses that use environmentally friendly water-based inks and offer improved color capacity, according to Tribune Publisher Tom Cullinan.
The staff reduction will affect 15 full-time and 13 part-time employees, although that number may be reduced since some new jobs are being created, Cullinan said. All other business functions will remain in San Luis Obispo.
Tribune employees who will be impacted by the move were given extended notice of the upcoming change and will be offered severance benefits and other transition assistance.
The trend toward regional printing sites began several years ago nationwide as reader habits began to evolve and consumers increasingly sought news digitally through smartphones, tablets and computers. The move has accelerated in recent years, reflecting the pace of technological change.
In response, The Tribune and other newspapers are providing news on multiple platforms, breaking news online throughout the day and evening, offering videos, photo galleries and documents to augment traditional stories, and offering more in-depth stories in print, Cullinan said.
The Tribune has more than 100,000 readers, with a daily combined print and digital circulation of 29,000 and a Sunday circulation of 40,000.
The Tribune is owned by Sacramento-based McClatchy, which owns The Fresno Bee and 27 other daily newspapers nationwide.
