The Bellingham, Wash.-based grocery chain will assume ownership of 83 stores in California starting this month.
With the acquisition, Haggen Inc., will expand from its current 18 stores and 16 pharmacies to 164 stores and 106 pharmacies across Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada and Arizona.
The Albertsons stores are located in Arroyo Grande, at 1132 W. Branch St.; in Atascadero, at 8200 El Camino Real; and in San Luis Obispo, at 771 Foothill Blvd. and 1321 Johnson Ave.
The Vons stores are at 1130 Los Osos Valley Road in Los Osos and in Paso Robles at 1191 E. Creston Road.
The conversion from Albertsons and Vons stores to Haggen stores will happen in early to mid-April. The pharmacies at the Albertsons stores in Arroyo Grande and Atascadero will be open most of the time during the change.
The first store to undergo a brand transformation is an Albertsons located in Carlsbad. An Albertsons store there will close Sunday evening and reopen as Haggen on Wednesday.
All store employees will have the opportunity to become employees of Haggen as their individual stores are transitioned to the Haggen brand, according to a news release from the company.
Haggen will assume ownership of the local stores as required under the federal review of Safeway’s sale to an investment group that owns Albertsons, The Bellingham (Wash.) Herald reported late last year. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission approved the purchase in January.
Most of the California stores involved in the sale are in the southern part of the state, with the San Luis Obispo County stores located the farthest north.
