John Lindsey — the public information officer and meteorologist at Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant and a Tribune weather columnist — has been named the Los Osos Citizen of the Year for 2014 by the Los Osos/Baywood Park Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to his daily weather forecasts, which are sent out to more than 6,000 people, Lindsey, who resides in Los Osos, is involved with a host of local volunteer efforts, racking up more than 1,000 volunteer hours in 2014.

He is the president of the board of directors of the nonprofit Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers organization, which has coordinated renovations of the head keeper’s house and other facilities.

Lindsey also volunteers for The Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County, American Red Cross, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Career Day at Los Osos Middle School, Earth Day at Montaña de Oro and other causes. And he serves on the boards of United Way of San Luis Obispo County and the PG&E Employees Veterans Resource Group, which raises money for scholarships.

His volunteerism includes teaching in the Los Osos STEAM program, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.

“Here’s a guy who goes way beyond what most people think of a volunteer — 1,000 (hours) each year,” said Gerard Ages, a past Los Osos Citizen of the Year, in a statement. “That’s amazing and an inspiration to all of us.”

Lindsey’s weather column in The Tribune includes safety tips, scientific and historical data. Lindsey also volunteers weather reports on the radio station KVEC.

His weather information is used by a multitude of local civic agencies, farmers, surfers and event planners. Lindsey has about 1,000 Twitter followers and 2,000 followers on his Facebook page.

“The word ‘humbled’ best describes my feelings,” Lindsey said of his award. “I have found in my life, the more you give, the more you care for other people — the more I receive. I think the path to happiness — self fulfillment — is helping others.”
