Christian’s Mattress Xpress to open store in Arroyo Grande

Christian’s Mattress Xpress, a family-owned and -operated mattress store, is expanding in San Luis Obispo County.

The business, which first opened in 1992 in Visalia, launched its first Central Coast location in late 2011 in Santa Maria. Since then, it has opened stores in San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles, and recently celebrated the grand opening of its Atascadero shop. A 6,000-square-foot store is expected to open in January on Grand Avenue at the Highway 101 entrance ramp in Arroyo Grande.

“We’ve been very well received on the Central Coast,” said Ron Gonzales, president of Christian’s Mattress Xpress. “We’re going into our third year here, and it’s unbelievable.”

Gonzales said the business is a family affair, with his wife, Deanne, overseeing payroll; his son, Christian, working as the general manager; and his other son, Jordon, a Cal Poly student, supervising the warehouse and logistics.

The mattress stores employ about 18 people and will be hiring more at the new store, Gonzales said.

The family used to own three stores in the Central Valley, but those were bought three years ago by Rocklin-based Sleep Train, he said.

The privately held firm declined to disclose financial figures.
