A North Coast fitness center has new owners who are the third consecutive family enterprise dedicated to running the two-decade-old business.
The Favilas have changed the name to Coast Fitness Club from Gym One, which they say will better reflect their future plans to make the 8,000-square-foot Cambria facility better, more complete and more fun, according to new owner Pablo Favila Jr., who heads up the venture.
The extended family also plans to hold an open house/grand opening from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 17.
Things that the Favilas want to add within the next month or so will help create a more rounded “coastal gym right in the heart of seaside Cambria,” a health center for all ages, fitness levels and goals, he told The Tribune.
“We want a place that feels like home, with plenty of free weights, strength machines and cardio gear, plus a full lineup of group fitness classes, the 31-year-old Favila said.
What might those additions include? Dressing rooms and showers should go in soon, and where the damaged swim-spa pool used to be they plan to install saunas.
Classes are included with the cost of membership. Those fees are currently $59 monthly, discounted to $53 for seniors and students, he said.
The Favila family closed escrow on April 1, buying the gym and fitness center from two people who’d owned it for about three years, according to one of the former co-owners, Gerardo and Dante Garcia.
The latter is a baker and Realtor who has owned and created delicacies at Carlock’s Bakery in Los Osos since 2021. Dante Garcia of Cambria said their family’s health center plans changed when his eldest son, who was running the gym, moved to San Diego to further his career.
The link between the former and current owner was formed at two other Cambria businesses, he said.
“I first met Pablo when he worked at Sandy’s Deli for Miguel Viveros and I was working for him at The French Corner Bakery,” Garcia said. “He’s a hard worker.”
The Baldwin family launched Gym One in June 2005 at 1266 Tamson Drive. Sheri and Glenn Baldwin sold their Cambria Physical Therapy facility at 900 Main St. to Tiffany and John McCain in January 2024, and Sheri Baldwin is a pelvic physical therapist at Spirit Wind physical therapy in San Luis Obispo.
What’s at Coast Fitness Club now, and what’s coming soon
“We’re excited about what’s ahead. While we’re keeping all staff and classes running as usual, we plan to slowly upgrade the entire facility,” Favila said.
“Some of the improvements coming include new free weight areas, dedicated core/body zones, including a push/pull sled area, new treadmills, a completely new room of strength machines and additional classes to better accommodate members’ schedules and improve class flow,” he said.
In the past, classes have been among the most-sought-after features at the gym.
“Our most popular classes right now are cycling and yoga, and our free-weight area sees the highest daily usage,” Favila said. “Looking ahead, we plan to expand our class offerings to include more age-friendly options for seniors, as well as functional training for all ages. While we have not yet partnered with SilverSneakers, we intend to work with our insurance providers to offer that option in the future.”
SilverSneakers is a fitness and wellness program for seniors on eligible Medicare plans.
They also want to attract new members.
“We currently serve just under 200 members. Our immediate priority is maintaining excellent service and member satisfaction, with a goal of welcoming 100 additional members by the end of the year. We also plan to adjust our membership fees to provide greater value to the community,” Favila said.
Who is the new owner of Cambria’s Coast Fitness Club?
Owning a business is nothing new for the lifelong Cambrian who has a background in small business, plus health and fitness, he said.
Favila’s currently pursuing an accreditation as a certified personal trainer (CPT) and says soon all his staffers will be CPR/AED certified.
He attended school in Cambria, where his father owns a landscaping business and his mother is a caregiver.
Favila said he’ll always be a “Bronco proud” from Cambria’s Coast Union High School.
His sister owns the Luna Coffee Bar in Cayucos, and his brother “will help me manage the gym.”
Favila attended Cuesta College before going into the restaurant business, buying the Luna Garden Bistro in Cayucos and running it for seven years.
“It’s still running, but I sold it to pursue my dream of owning a gym,” he said.
Here’s more about Coast Fitness Club
Members of Coast Fitness Club enjoy 24/7 access to the facility (each member gets a key) and plenty of on- and off-site parking, according to Favila and the gym’s Facebook page.
“We’re especially proud of our focus on senior health and wellness, and a group-class schedule designed to meet the members where they are along their fitness journey,” the listing said.
“Our goal is simple: Create a friendly, welcoming community where everyone can train, learn and thrive,” the Facebook page said.
Get details at the sign-in desk that’s open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, check the facility’s Facebook page or call 805-927-4961.
