How SLO County sisters took kids shop from online to prime downtown spot
A colorful kids shop moved to a larger Atascadero spot that has been sitting vacant for years — now bringing inventory like high quality children’s clothing, books, gifts and Danish-style mouse plush toys to downtown.
Shop Little Cousins on El Camino Real opened as an online shop in January 2024, when sisters Jen Halmo and Katie Rosevear could not find any cute clothing for their kids.
“After my son was born, realizing a lot of the materials of clothes out there are not soft, not comfortable. They’re not stretchy, and there’s just so many better, cute options,” Halmo told The Tribune. “I realized we could get him much better dressed than currently what is out there.”
So Halmo and Rosevear went on the hunt, curating cute, comfortable clothing for toddlers and kids, high-quality and safe toys and even organic pajamas.
Shop Little Cousin is named after Henry, Halmo’s kid, and Olivia and Archer, children of Rosevear — the “little cousins” — and Rosevear’s left-handed doodle named Sherman is the shop’s mascot and logo.
The sisters sold from the online store until one day, Rosevear was walking to buy bagels at JonnyBoys Bagelry, and she saw a “for rent” sign at 5990 Entrada Ave. She immediately called Halmo.
“She was like, ‘By the way, we’re opening a store,’” Halmo said.
Shop Little Cousins opened its brick-and-mortar on Entrada Avenue in August 2024, but it only stayed a year in the slightly hidden spot before moving to the new prime downtown spot on 6425 El Camino Real in late 2025.
The new children’s store has clothing, books, swimming gear, toys, teddies and gifts.
Little mice toys called Mailegs are displayed all around the shop. Rosevear had to fill out an application to be chosen to carry the Danish-style teddies.
“She went through a big interview process and everything,” Halmo said. “I was excited to get that, and I’ve become a total expert on them.”
Shop Little Cousins also carries brands like Mayoral, Angel Dear and Makemake Organics, all displayed with the Mailegs.
Now the pair is intent on enjoying their new location.
“There’s so many people who come in, and they’re like, ‘Are you guys brand new?’” Halmo said. “We’re like, ‘No, we were literally right around the corner,’ and they’re like, ‘What? We never even go down that street.’ Obviously that’s horrible, because it’s such a cute street with great stuff on it, but we’re so happy to be where we are now.”
