Miner’s is opening a new SLO County store — but don’t expect that big garden shop

A local hardware store is opening an eighth location in San Luis Obispo County, though its beloved garden shop will be a little different than in its other stores at first.

Miner’s Ace Hardware is set to open in Paso Robles in early spring, the business announced on its Instagram on Feb. 10.

The business is hitting its 70-year anniversary of being in business, and President Paul Filice told The Tribune they have looked at the North County area for a while before waiting for the “right opportunity to present itself.”

“Being a small family business, growth needs to be planned, and so we need to be very pragmatic in the approach to do that” he said. “The timing was right for us, and the property was available in Paso, so the timing lined up perfectly for us.”

Miner’s Ace Hardware is moving into the old Rite Aid at 1151 Creston Road, Filice said, and the store will have its usual services like paint color matching, screen repair, key cutting and the classic free fresh popcorn offered to customers.

As for the garden shop, Filice said it will be set in the front of Miner’s Ace Hardware, with “small growth” planned for the nursery.

Miner’s is well-known for its expansive garden shops at its other local stores.

“We plan to expand the nursery in the years coming after we open,” he said. “We’re going to start with a small nursery then grow it out into the front of the store.”

What is local hardware store’s history in SLO County?

Miner’s Ace Hardware was first founded in 1956 by brothers Lee and Glenn Miner in Grover Beach. The business joined Ace Hardware in 1972, opening nine stores over the course of three decades, according to its website.

The store has seven locations in SLO County, in cities and towns including Atascadero, Morro Bay, Los Osos, SLO, Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach and Nipomo.

“The community factor is a huge deal for us,” Filice said. “One of our core values is to give back to the community that enables our success, and so we’ve already reached out to some of the local schools to see how we can start helping them with sponsorships and so on.”
