After months of waiting and planning, Luxe Ranch Western Outfitter held its long-awaited soft opening in a former Cambria firehouse in October.
A western store in Cambria? A Central Coast town known for art, wine, dining, tourism, shopping, easy hiking and its proximity to the ocean?
It’s easy to forget that Cambria’s also an agricultural town, with cattle, crops and vineyards in the surrounding ranchlands. Besides, Cambria’s had dedicated Western shops before, such as Linda Finley’s now-closed Every Cowboy’s RanchHouse Gallery.
What can shoppers find at Luxe Ranch?
Robin Stater, Luxe Ranch’s owner and designer, says her new curated western store at 4039 Burton Drive has a wide range of products and services.
They’ll be similar to, but different than, the furnishings, unique home decor, antiques, jewelry and more that she’s offered since 1988 at her Sierra Design Studio in Mammoth Lakes, where the logo is “interior design that soothes the heart and soul.”
In Cambria, however, “instead of mountain style, it’s more western and eclectic,” Stater told The Tribune in late September. “It features antiques, new and used accessories, art, fashion ... and a hat bar.”
“Stetson and Charlie Horse will be my first featured hats,” she said, adding that “custom decorated hats will be offered in the near future.”
Stater is billing her luxury Cambria western outfitter shop as “a new destination for western-inspired living on the Central Coast … where western flair meets modern charm.”
It will straddle the area between luxury and comfort.
The designer will continue to own and run the Mammoth Lakes store, she said, but will do it mostly remotely, including any design projects she takes on in that area.
Mammoth Lakes is southeast of Yosemite and about 325 miles northeast of Cambria.
“I maintain a home in the Sierra, but that will be for vacations mainly, and it’s used as a vacation rental,” Stater said. “Otherwise, I will live locally on the Central Coast” with the Winter family that owns Cambria Pines Lodge and Cambria Nursery, among other businesses.
At the Templeton-area 46 Ranch, she and her family raise various crops and registered, full-sized and mini heritage Highland cows, a long-horned Scottish breed with long, shaggy coats.
Future plans at 46 Ranch include offering tours and other activities, she said.
A couple of the mini cows even returned to the Luxe Ranch store’s soft opening on Oct. 4, according to Instagram. The small bovines had charmed passersby at the store’s site prior to the official launch.
“The opening was incredibly successful with tourists and locals alike and everyone incredibly supportive,” State said. “It exceeded my wildest expectations.”
Cambria shop owner has shifted from SoCal to the Central Coast
Stater was born and grew up in Southern California, where she developed a passion for art as a child, she said, studying many different mediums.
She also loves all the elements of nature, plus equestrian pursuits, gardening, hiking, skiing and cooking.
From the start at her mountain-area business, she was involved in building homes and had a passion for design and construction, she said.
After founding Sierra Design Studio, the self-taught designer focused on creating homescapes from the inside out, from mansions to restaurants, including interior design, landscaping, new and remodeled construction.
Now, for the next chapter of her life, Stater is bringing her skills and her products to the Central Coast, trading Sierra mountains, snow and skiing for Cambria’s blend of family, hills, vineyards and the Pacific.

For now, Stater plans to have Luxe Ranch open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, but open later on Fridays, Saturdays and holidays.
Depending on the flow of business, it may close one or two days a week, she said.
