The husband-and-wife duo made the announcement of their planned retirement on the bakery’s Facebook and Instagram pages, at the same also breaking the news that the bakery was for sale.
“It’s hard, I’ve been in the community for so long, doing special things for people, so I think the closer it gets, the more emotional it gets,” Chris Lossing told The Tribune as she was making a wedding cake Friday. “It was a hard decision to do, but we’re not getting any younger, and we need to try to enjoy life a little bit.”
Arroyo Grande Bakery first opened in 1956, with Lossing joining the original owners in 1979 and taking over the bakery with Marc in 1989.
“I put my heart and soul in it, so it’s nice that people appreciate it all these years,” she said.
Arroyo Grande Bakery is selling for $175,000, according to Central Coast Business Brokers. Lossing said she hopes someone takes over the bakery before its planned closing day of Sept. 27.
Recipes for the bakery’s famous buttercream frosting, cookies, cakes and pies are all in the listing, Lossing said, meaning whoever buys Arroyo Grande Bakery will hopefully be able to continue the bakery’s tradition.
“Our recipe for our buttercream is a big deal,” she said. “We have so many people who have done that buttercream. The recipe comes with the sale.”
