  • Rite Aid plans to close six more San Luis Obispo County stores in summer 2025.
  • Closures follow bankruptcy filing and failed attempts to sell select locations.
  • Future of Pismo Beach and Foothill Blvd. stores remains undecided by company.

A handful more San Luis Obispo County Rite Aids are expected to close in the coming weeks as the bankrupt pharmacy chain divests itself of hundreds of its stores across the country.

According to a series of notices filed in bankruptcy court in June, five more San Luis Obispo County locations will join three other local stores previously marked for closure.

Those are:

  • Arroyo Grande, 1690 East Grand Ave.
  • Arroyo Grande, 1207 Grand Ave.
  • Paso Robles, 1151 Creston Road
  • Paso Robles, 2424 Spring St.
  • San Luis Obispo, 1251 Johnson Ave.

They join the already closed Los Osos and Atascadero locations, as well as the soon-to-close Morro Bay store.

The Atascadero store closed abruptly within the last week. As of Tuesday, a message on the store’s phone line specifically noted that the pharmacy was closed and directed customers to the CVS in town.

The Morro Bay store is next, expected to close July 7, a representative previously told The Tribune.

Why is Rite Aid closing stores?

The closures come after the pharmacy chain entered voluntary Chapter 11 proceedings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court of the District of New Jersey on May 5, Rite Aid said in a news release.

“For more than 60 years, Rite Aid has been a proud provider of pharmacy services and products to our loyal customers,” CEO Matt Schroede said in the release. “While we have continued to face financial challenges, intensified by the rapidly evolving retail and healthcare landscapes in which we operate, we are encouraged by meaningful interest from a number of potential national and regional strategic acquirors.”

“As we move forward, our key priorities are ensuring uninterrupted pharmacy services for our customers and preserving jobs for as many associates as possible,” he concluded.

In the weeks since the announcement, the company has slowly been adding more of its stores to the closure list as attempts to sell off certain properties were unsuccessful.

When will SLO County Rite Aids close?

Closure dates for the soon-to-shutter local Rite Aids are staggered throughout the coming weeks.

According to store representatives, the location at 1690 E. Grand Ave. in Arroyo Grande is slated to close July 27, followed by the 1251 Johnson Ave. store in San Luis Obispo on Aug. 17 and the 2424 Spring St. store in Paso Robles on Aug. 24.

A representative for the 1151 Creston Road Rite Aid in Paso Robles declined to share a closure date with The Tribune, citing the company’s media policy. A representative for the 1207 E. Grand Ave. store in Arroyo Grande meanwhile directed all media requests to the company’s press line.

Requests for comment from the company’s media contact were not returned as of Tuesday.

With the latest closures, only the future of the Pismo Beach location at 531 5 Cities Drive and the San Luis Obispo location at 956 Foothill Blvd. are still up in the air.
