A Japanese home goods chain is planning to open first SLO County store. When?

A Daiso is set to open its doors at Arroyo Grande’s Five Cities Center this summer.

The discount store’s first location in San Luis Obispo County is set to replace Pier 1 Imports at 901 Rancho Parkway.

The 50-year-old Japanese discount store has over 100,000 products and operates over 6,000 stores, according to its website.

Founded as Yano Shoten in 1972 by the late Hirotake Yano, the brand is known for selling everything and anything, including kitchenware, stationary, stuffed animals and even makeup and snacks.

The business, now famous for its inexpensive products, changed its name to Daiso in 1977, according to AP News. It expanded to the United States in 2005.

The chain today is in the midst of a California expansion. Its upcoming Arroyo Grande location is one of nine Daisos opening this year in the state.

The nearest location is in Santa Maria, at 2286 Bradley Road.

Daiso is scheduled to open in the Five Cities Center in Arroyo Grande near Petco this summer. It is the former Pier 1 Imports location, seen here on May 9, 2025.

When will new SLO County Daiso open?

The Arroyo Grande location is currently under construction as it converts to the signature Daiso look, including a coat of hot pink paint on the walls.

A marketing representative for Daiso told The Tribune the Arroyo Grande store will open in the middle of summer. The company is expected to release more details closer to June.
