Pismo Beach juice and smoothie bar to close after 7 years. Here’s why

Joy Health Bar opened under the premise of chasing joy and bringing the feeling to others.

Now, the business announced its last day will be Dec. 30.

The health bar wrote on Facebook about the final hours of its business, and made the last call for any final juice orders before the closure.

“Seeing people walk around with rainbows of juice always makes me smile,” one person commented on the announcement. “Shell Beach will never be the same or as rad.”

Online orders for the final day for juice pick-up must be made by Dec. 27, the business wrote.

The reason for the closure? The economy.

Owner Chelsea Brescia told The Tribune with the economic hardships brought on by the pandemic and construction projects at times temporarily closing down Shell Beach Road, business was slow.

“At this point, I’ve brought business to Shell Beach, but Shell Beach hasn’t really brought business to me,” Brescia said. “It’s been a fight or flight situation for several years now.”

Brescia opened Joy in April 2017 to care for the community and provide a space for people to come together or to take a moment to themselves. The health bar offers a selection of juices, bowls and smoothies.

Brescia said she tied to obtain a new lease for the business for a long time, but that was delayed with back-and-forth because the building was up for sale. Business coming to Joy was also deterred once “for sale” signs were placed in front of the health bar, she said.

“People thought that we had closed down already because they saw the ‘for sale’ signs,” she said. “We’ve heard from a lot of people that they thought we had already closed down, and it was not our intention.”

Joy’s location at 1801 Shell Beach Road was listed for sale for $1.6 million on Realty.com as of Thursday.

Brescia said she would love to relocate Joy somewhere else, but would need a business partner or investor to make it happen.

“I feel like we did what we set out to do, and that makes me feel great,” she said. “I just hope that all those people that got to experience Joy and feel the magic of it, they were also a big part of that magic and I just hope they carry that with them.”

The health bar will be open every day until Dec. 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. To order online, visit its website.
