The bonus is back! SLO’s reward for shopping local returns for holidays. Here’s how it works

San Luis Obispo’s shop-local incentive is returning just in time for the holiday season.

The city’s Buy Local Bonus, in partnership with the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce, will return for its fifth year on Black Friday and is expected to run through Christmas Eve while supplies last.

Last year, the program “injected more than $940,000” into the local economy. That was the program’s most successful year to date, the city said at the time.

How does Buy Local Bonus work?

According to its website, the city purchased $625 in gift cards from each participating San Luis Obispo businesses — including retail, restaurants, fitness and personal services — that will then be distributed among qualifying shoppers throughout the duration of the program.

To nab one of those $25 gift cards, shoppers must spend $100 or more at local retailers in San Luis Obispo on or after Nov. 29. Businesses that don’t qualify include restaurants or dining, big-box stores, convenience and drug stores and grocery stores, according to the website.

They can then take their receipts to the SLO Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center by 4 p.m. on Dec. 24 to claim their reward. The visitor center is located at 895 Monterey St.

All gift cards must be picked up in person.

Shoppers can get up to three gift cards over the entire span of the program. The Buy Local Bonus will continue until funds are exhausted, according to the website.
