Like many other tech workers nationwide, Paso Robles-born Tim Brehmer lost his job in a layoff.

Brehmer made the best of these layoffs, though, and turned his love for the outdoors into his next great career adventure.

On Feb 3., Brehmer opened Sheep’s Head Outfitters on Spring Street in Paso Robles. The store sells clothing for the outdoors and gear like cast iron pans, sleeping bags and backpacks.

In an interview with The Tribune, Brehmer said he places a specific emphasis on ensuring the products he sells are sustainable — many of which are American-made.

In addition to offering high-quality goods, Sheep’s Head Outfitters is a safe space for people of any outdoor experience level, Brehmer said.

“Customers can buy products and learn about these products that are going to make them feel good,” Brehmer said. “I want to help guide customers on that journey because it can be very intimidating and actually keeps a lot of people from enjoying the outdoors.”

Brehmer also said he noticed a lack of accessible outdoors stores in Paso Robles and the North County and added that he hopes his shop will change that.

“There’s a really avid outdoor community in the North County, and there are not a lot of places to go to get that stuff,” Brehmer said. “I want to fill a need that the people here want as well.”

Brehmer, who once worked as a backcountry guide at Yellowstone National Park, said conservation is an important pillar of the store. He added that he is hoping to make his store a “2% organization,” meaning 1% of his time and 1% percent of his money are donated to conservation charities.

To do this, Brehmer said Sheep’s Head Outfitters will partner with local conservation groups as a way to “keep the world as wonderful as we can for the next generation.”

The most important thing to Brehmer, though, is that he is able to build a community in a place he feels has given him so much in life.
