San Luis Obispo is once again offering incentives for people to shop local this holiday season.

The city of San Luis Obispo and San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce relaunched the Buy Local Bonus program, which rewards people for shopping at local retail businesses, on Friday, according to a news release.

For a limited time, those who spend $100 at San Luis Obispo retail businesses can get a free $25 gift card to another local business, while supplies last, according to the release.

The program will continue until funds are exhausted, and shoppers can qualify up to three times through Christmas Eve.

“We’re committed to reinvesting in the community by bringing Buy Local Bonus back this year,” San Luis Obispo city manager Derek Johnson said in the release. “This is a great way to show your love of San Luis Obispo and support small businesses here. Shop local, shop small, support our community and get rewarded.”

To get a gift card, bring a copy of your itemized receipts to the San Luis Obispo Visitor Center. You will then be able to choose between available gift cards.

Only receipts from businesses that sell retail goods will qualify for Buy Local Bonus gift cards, the city said.

Receipts from big box retailers, restaurants, convenience and drug stores, grocery stores, supermarkets, lodging business and gas stations will not be accepted, according to the release.

“Injecting money into our local economy is critical to small business success,” Chamber President Jim Dantona said in the release. “The hundreds of thousands of dollars spent locally through this program will support our doers and dreamers, and help small businesses thrive this holiday season.”

The city plans to launch a similar Eat Local Bonus program in January for food and drink purchases made locally.
