A new store for buying and trading Lego collectibles has opened in downtown San Luis Obispo.

Bricks & Minifigs opened to crowds at its new location at 863 Marsh St. over the weekend.

On Saturday, owners Bo and Shannon Schmidt told The Tribune they were excited to see the large turnout for the soft opening. A grand opening is planned for January.

“It’s been a lot busier than I expected it to be,” Shannon Schmidt said as dozens of customers milled about the shop Saturday afternoon.

Bricks & Minifigs specializes in buying, selling and trading new and used Lego sets, as well as bulk bricks and minifigures, also known as minifigs.

The Marsh Street location is a local franchise of a national business, with stores across the United States.

“We really want to bring the community in and let them have a lot of fun,” Bo Schmidt said on Saturday. “We’ve seen a lot of smiles getting the store ready, and today it’s just been great seeing all of the kids come in, and even us older folks that really love Legos.”

Legos understandably are somewhat of an “obsession” for the Schmidt family.

Kyle Schmidt, 12, said the whole family loves Legos so much they added a room to their home just for the toys.

“It’s what started this obsession,” Shannon Schmidt laughed.

Beside buying, selling and trading Lego collectibles, the Schmidts also plan to use the store to host birthday parties, special Lego-themed events, family nights, team-building meetings and more.

“It’s going to be more of a community type store — instead of just selling products, we’re going to sell fun,” Bo Schmidt said. “Come and visit us and see all the smiles that are going on. We’d love to share it with you.”

The store is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
