New ‘spaghetti joint’ is opening in SLO County — and owner has ties to familiar spots

If you’re looking for a casual Italian dining experience, local restaurant owner James “Jimmy” Delmore has a new, family-friendly spot for you.

“This cuisine cuts across all ages,” Delmore said, from kids to grownups. “That’s the beauty of it. Seniors love it, and then people with families bring them in for a bowl of spaghetti. It’s just a good fit for everybody.”

Delmore is the owner and chef of Jimmy D’s Spaghetti Joint, a new eatery opening soon at 1301 West Grand Ave. in Grover Beach.

The spot, which Delmore called a “casual spaghetti joint,” will feature traditional Italian dishes such as pasta and eggplant Parmesan at affordable prices, he said.

“My tagline at all my restaurants — and I’ve had tons of them throughout the area throughout the years — I always put the tagline ‘deliciously affordable,’” he said. “That’s my deal.”

Delmore isn’t no stranger to the local restaurant scene. He previous owned Angelo’s in San Luis Obispo, which closed in 2000, and was one of the co-founders of Del’s Pizzeria in Pismo Beach.

Most recently, he was a co-owner of Jimmy Bump’s Pasta House in Los Osos. He and partner Diana Zaffina sold that business to new owners, who have rebranded it as Hazards.

After selling Jimmy Bump’s, Delmore said he was in the market for a new restaurant, and the Grover Beach location just happened to open up.

Conveniently, the space was already set up as a restaurant and had recently been renovated before the prior owner decided to close. The Grand Street spot was previously home to Let’s Wing It.

“It’s just a great little building,” Delmore said. “It’s been a restaurant for a long time.”

Jimmy D’s will be the first restaurant that’s technically within walking distance of where Delmore himself lives — making it a true neighborhood spot.

“We know a lot of people around here and they’re all really excited about it,” he said.

So far the response online has been very supportive, Delmore added, noting that there seems to be a lot of interest around a more casual dining restaurant in the area.

“There’s nothing nobody doing anything like that,” he said. “So a lot of people have been driving to San Luis for Olive Garden or ... other places but there’s nobody doing anything like this.”

Delmore said he plans to hold some sort of soft opening for the restaurant this weekend, with an official opening by Nov. 2.

Once fully opened, the restaurant will be open for dinner six days a week and closed on Mondays.
