Dutch Bros opens its first location in SLO County. Here’s where

If you are looking for a new place to grab a cup of coffee, you’re in luck.

Popular Oregon-based chain Dutch Bros Coffee opened Monday in Arroyo Grande.

The new coffee shop, at the former Broadway Bagels location at 1259 E Grand Ave., features a large two-lane drive-through and a currently-out-of-service walk-up counter where people can pick up drinks.

It’s the first Dutch Bros location in San Luis Obispo County; another opened in Santa Maria earlier this year.

Dutch Bros has more than 400 locations across the United States. The coffeehouse chain is known for an eclectic mix of coffee, energy drinks, smoothies and other drinks, all served by an energetic crop of “bro-istas” — usually young, smiling workers who bop along to blaring music as they deliver drinks.

The company also has an altruistic bent. It and its franchise owners donate “several million dollars to support its customers, local communities and nonprofit organizations,” according to the Dutch Bros website.

“Dutch Bros strives to be a force for good through outstanding customer service and killer coffee,” reads the website.

On Saturday, a line formed down Grand Avenue in Arroyo Grande as Dutch Bros celebrated its soft opening by giving out free drinks through its drive-through.

As cars pulled through, funkily dressed employees chatted with customers, helped them learn about the menu and reminded them to come back on Monday for the official opening. A group of employees stood outside the drive-through entrance, whooping and cheering any time a car would pull in.

Dutch Bros is open Sunday through Thursday from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
