Downtown SLO clothing store closes after 27 years: ‘Everything must go’

A downtown San Luis Obispo clothing store that has operated in the city for nearly three decades is closing.

The store, which first opened in 1993 in San Luis Obispo, is one of dozens of businesses that have closed in the city in recent months amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Express officials didn’t respond to requests for comment, but the local store had posted signs noting its pending departure.

The Downtown Centre store will remain open at its location at 887 Higuera St. until the end of January 2021, said Therese Cron, vice president of West Coast Leasing for Jamestown, the commercial property owner.

“Express is a first-generation tenant with us and has been in place since 1993,” Cron said. “I have a (new business tenant) prospect that I’ve been working with for some time now — hoping to have a lease signed within the next 60 days.”

Express sells clothes, jewelry, purses and more for men and women.

According to the clothing chain’s website, the company has stores nationwide in states including California, Nevada, Hawaii, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

San Luis Obispo officials said that 353 businesses closed at the end of fiscal year 2020. Since June, 150 have applied for new business licenses.

Express is offering liquidation sales with items up to 70% off.

Signs were posted around the store Monday saying “Everything must go” and “Nothing held back!”
