SLO County tattoo shops, nail salons and other personal services could open next week

One of the last traditional business sectors to remain closed in light of the coronavirus pandemic could be reopening in San Luis Obispo County as early as the end of next week.

San Luis Obispo County public health officer Penny Borenstein said her department is considering whether personal service businesses such as tattoo shops, nail salons, massage therapists and skincare or cosmetology services could soon reopen.

On Friday, Borenstein said she is reviewing state guidance released this week that would lay out rules and regulations to allow that sector to reopen.

That review could be completed by June 19, at which point those businesses would be allowed to reopen, she said.

The businesses that are under consideration include those offering facials, electrolysis, waxing, skin care, cosmetology services, nail salon services, body art, tattoos, piercings and massage therapy in non-healthcare settings.

In preparation, Borenstein said business owners in those industries should begin examining the state’s guidance and implementing the changes necessary.

The state’s guidance on those industries is available at https://www.emergencyslo.org/en/reopening.aspx .
