Like to buy local? Try these SLO County stores on Small Business Saturday
While Black Friday is traditionally dominated by big-box stores like Target and Wal-Mart, more people are choosing instead to shop local for the holidays.
American Express launched Small Business Saturday in 2010 to encourage shoppers to head to their small and locally owned businesses during the holidays for special deals.
So for those of you out there who want to shop small, here’s a roundup of some of the best deals available this Small Business Saturday at San Luis Obispo County businesses:
San Luis Obispo
DowntownSLO is offering “Shop Small” passports at participating locations, where shoppers who get eight stamps will be entered to win a basket filled with gift cards to downtown businesses. Almost 30 businesses in the downtown corridor are participating, including Tails Pet Boutique, San Luis Traditions, EcoBambino, Ambiance Boutiques, SLOFly, Moon River Salon and Spa, Splash Café Downtown SLO, Len Collective, Yarns...at the Adobe, Diane's Beachwear, The Bladerunner Salon Spa Store, Karson Butler Events at the Ah Louis Store, Unique Selections, Adore Boutique SLO, SLO Bike Kitchen and 2Blondes.
Drop off your passport by 6 p.m. at Jules D., HumanKind Fair Trade , Hands Gallery or Picking Daisies. The winner of the gift basket will be announced at the Tree Lighting Ceremony on Monday at Mission Plaza.
▪ Ambiance Boutique is offering 25 percent off all Free People items.
▪ B Anthony & Co Jewelers is offering $50 off any purchase of $200 or more. The promotion runs all day Saturday, and applies to any item in the store.
▪ Change of A Dress-Women’s Resale & Consignment Boutique is offering 25 percent off entire purchase; the second-hand shop will also have treats and cider for shoppers.
▪ Central Coast Surfboards is offering 20 percent off the entire store, plus buy-one, get-one 50 percent off deals on Quiksilver, RVCA, Billabong, Hurley, Salty Crew, Volcom; 30 percent off all O’Neill apparel; a free leash or traction pad with purchase of new surfboards; and Stance Socks, buy three get one free. Sale runs through Sunday.
▪ Dune Central Coast is offering 10 percent off all furniture and 15 percent off rugs. Bamboo furniture will also be 20 percent off.
▪ Growing Grounds Downtown is offering 15 percent off all stock, except consignment; buyers will also receive a coupon for discounts on future purchases.
▪ Habitat Home & Garden is offering 10 percent off the entire store.
▪ HumanKind Fair Trade will have free coffee, chocolate samples, a raffle drawing for a gift certificate and free parking tokens for the first 50 customers, good for a free hour in one of the San Luis Obispo downtown parking garages.
▪ Shoppers at Jules D. will have the chance to play Trivial Pursuit and win 20 percent off in-stock regular-priced purchases. Will also have ale and hot cider for guests.
▪ Picking Daisies is offering 20 percent off Christmas-themed fabric and napkins in store and online; in-store shoppers will also get food, cider and free giveaways.
▪ !Romp Shoes is offering 20 percent off the entire store through Sunday.
▪ SLO Transit is offering free bus rides all day Saturday. Routes 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A will be in service from approximately 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The public can make connections to SLO Transit routes all day with free bus service, as well.
▪ SLO Visitors Center is offering 20 percent off its SLO-made items. Includes everything except wine.
▪ The Sock Drawer is offering 20 percent off all stock Saturday; it’s also participating in the “Shop Small” passports.
▪ Urban Optics will have Tecate beer and taquitos for shoppers starting at 10 a.m.
North County
Downtown Paso Main Street Association is giving out bingo cards in its Holiday Songbooks. Get your full bingo card stamped at participating stores for a chance to win one of three shopping sprees downtown for $400, $200 or $75. Drawing for prizes will be held Dec. 10. Must be over 18 years of age to participate.
▪ Downtown Paso Main Street Association will also host a Holiday Craft Bazaar at Downtown City Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. selling local arts, crafts and handmade goods; admission to the event is free.
▪ Atascadero Hay and Feed will offer 20 percent off much of its horse gear, 25 percent off Barkworthies treats and bones, assorted deals on hay and grass, 20 percent off stoneware pieces and 20 percent off a Quick Pickle Kit.
▪ Atascadero Jewelry and Loan will remove sales tax for its selection of musical instruments, electronics, tools and jewelery; shoppers can also get coffee and donuts.
▪ First Class Barbershop Paso Robles is offering $1 off all suavecito pomades.
▪ Quilters Cupboard Atascadero is offering 25 percent off all regularly priced merchandise from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m..
South County
▪ Nan’s Pre-owned Books in Grover Beach is selling certain books for between 25 cents and $1 through the weekend.
▪ Posies in the Arroyo Grande Village is offering 20 percent off storewide; includes goods in Chrisy’s Cottage and Affairs of the Heart sub-sections.
▪ Village Paper and Gifts is having a buy two, get one free sale on Pandora Jewelry
▪ S omething Different in Nipomo has 30 percent off all regular-priced BC furniture; BC costume jewelry necklaces for $9.99, 30 percent off all boutique clothing and 10 percent off the rest of the store, excluding sale or “net” items.
