On the heels of its recently completed Paso Robles brewhouse expansion, Firestone Walker Brewing Co. is already planning the next phase of its growth.

The Central Coast beer giant just finished its $15 million visitors center and brewery. Now it’s undertaking an $8 million fermentation tank facility in the old Nu-Way Cleaners building on Vendels Circle, near its main campus on Ramada Drive.

The 12 tanks, which will resemble 65-foot towers, are part of the Firestone Walker’s quest to increase its efficiency and add capacity, co-founder Adam Firestone wrote in an email. The company plans to add 6,300 square feet to the 19,000-square-foot Nu-Way building, according to a city staff report.

A pipe bridge 17 feet above street level will connect the tank facility, to be known as Cold Block 4, to the new brewhouse.

Firestone Walker Brewing Co. is putting the final touches on a two-year, $15 million expansion of its Paso Robles brewhouse and new visitor center.

“The scale is more energy efficient and also will allow us to recapture our weekends,” Firestone said. “For the past several years we have had to work through weekends, brewing 24/7, as the older tanks and brewhouse were smaller and slower.”

City Council members recently approved the tanks and pipe bridge. The tanks’ height and their impact on views from Highway 101 were discussed during initial Development Review Committee meetings in April, but the Planning Commission and City Council ultimately approved the project.

The tank facility is expected to be functional by mid-2018, according to Sean Weir, a spokesman for Firestone Walker.
