‘Extreme' heat headed to Palm Springs area as high could hit 116
The Coachella Valley will get even hotter this week, with Thursday forecast to hit 114 to 116 degrees some places - the highest temperatures of the year so far.
An extreme heat warning was issued due to the "dangerously hot conditions" from 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 9, according to the National Weather Service. Chandler Price, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said temperatures will gradually rise over that time period.
This is much hotter than usual for early July.
"The heat in the Palm Springs area tends to peak around July and August. However, temperatures Thursday will be up to five to ten degrees above average," Price said.
But it'll gradually cool - a little - after Thursday, he added. The meteorologist recommended people give themselves extra time to acclimate, drink extra water and try to stay indoors during the heat.
The National Weather Service's weekly forecast for Palm Springs predicted highs around 109 on Monday, 111 on Tuesday, 114 on Wednesday, 115 on Thursday, 112 on Friday, 110 on Saturday and 109 on Sunday.
