S.F. police arrest Discovery Bay man in fatal Mission District crash

San Francisco police have arrested a man in connection with a fatal crash that killed a pedestrian and injured three other people in the Mission District in May, authorities said Wednesday.

Samuel Powell, 57, of Discovery Bay, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and failing to exercise due care for the safety of a pedestrian in the roadway.

The crash happened around 12:13 a.m. on May 25 near 16th and Mission streets, according to the San Francisco Police Department. Officers responding to the scene found a pedestrian suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Police said a preliminary investigation found that a vehicle struck the pedestrian and also hit three additional victims. Those three people were assessed at the scene for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Paramedics transported the victim to a local hospital, where the person was later pronounced dead.

Police have not identified the pedestrian killed.
