Body found at San Jose sewage treatment plant, cause of death unknown
Authorities are investigating after a body was found at the San Jose-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility in north San Jose on Wednesday.
Police responded at about 12:50 p.m. to the 700 block of Los Esteros Road, after a report of a body found at the local government-run sewage treatment facility operated by the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara.
San Jose police investigators are working with the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner to determine the circumstances surrounding the death, including the cause.
"At this time, we are still in the infancy of this investigation and do not have very many details," the police department said in a statement.
Police did not release any further details and an investigation is ongoing. The identity of the person has not been released.
The San Jose-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility is a massive sewage treatment plant that handles wastewater for cities across Silicon Valley. The 2,600-acre plant is in the Alviso neighborhood of San Jose and surrounded by salt ponds and marshland.
The discovery comes just days after a body was found on June 2 at a Waste Management facility on Davis Street in San Leandro, near the Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline, according to multiple media reports.
The man's name and cause of death were not released and an autopsy was pending. The San Leandro police case is ongoing.
