12.6 acres treated in Jenner Headlands Preserve prescribed burn
Cal Fire Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit and The Wildlands Conservancy conducted a 12.6 acre prescribed burn at the Jenner Headlands Preserve Sunday, May 31.
The burn, near Duncans Mills and the Sonoma Coast, was on a ridgetop to treat an area of mixed forest understory. The project started at about 10 a.m. and the ignition was complete by about 3 p.m.
Eight engines from Cal Fire and one engine and a water tender from the Timber Cove Fire Department were on site to treat the area.
Cal Fire spokesperson Jason Clay explained this is a typical area for vegetation management. This sort of burn reduces hazardous vegetation, improves ecosystem health and builds wildfire resilience in the area.
Crews will remain on scene into the evening and will continue monitoring the burn area over the next several days. Smoke from the treated area may still be visible.
Cal Fire has several upcoming prescribed burns: Lake Sonoma on June 3 and 4, Hillside Ranch on June 5 and the Pepperwood Preserve during the week of June 8. The dates of these may change depending on weather conditions, Clay said.
