Riverside has closed its downtown police station ahead of its demolition, and the site is slated for a new replacement police headquarters.

The station at 4102 Orange St., which was built in 1963, closed on Friday, May 29. Demolition is slated for later this year, Riverside Police spokesperson Detective Steven Espinosa said.

Personnel from the downtown station will temporarily be relocated to Magnolia Station, at 10540 Magnolia Ave, Ste. B, Riverside, he said.

Riverside city leaders approved the design of a new headquarters last year for $3.3 million. The total estimated budget for the project was nearly $59.5 million - if the city was able to break ground in one year — but the total has been bumped to about nearly $62 million.

Measure Z funding has been used to fund the project. Measure Z, is coming to the ballot for an extension in the Tuesday, June 2, election, which would raise the city's sales tax from 1 cent to 1.25 cents to raise an additional $21 million for public safety and other services.

The current facility is outdated and does not support an efficient work environment, according to the Police Department.

The construction is scheduled to take some time and due to complete around late 2028, Espinosa said.
