Want to hear Annie the kitten’s affectionate purr? She’s looking for a loving home

Annie has come so far, though it won’t be obvious to most people.

She’ll seem shy and possibly hiss. If you pick her up, you may hear her soft growl. But if you move slowly toward her, are gentle and use a soft voice, you’ll begin to hear her loud, long purr.

It helps to know Annie’s story.

At just 6 weeks old, Annie was brought into the San Luis Obispo County Animal Services shelter with her feral mother. Staff noticed the mother hissing at little Annie instead of nurturing her.

For Annie’s safety, she went into a foster home for several weeks in preparation to eventually be adopted.

Most kittens in need of fostering are playful and quickly become affectionate.

Whether helping social or shy kittens, volunteer fosters provide a valuable service by giving homeless kittens a safe place to thrive until they’re about two months old and ready for adoption.

Foster kittens are vaccinated and spayed or neutered prior to adoption, provided by Animal Services. The foster homes supply food, litter, warm shelter and lots of love and kindness.

Kitten season starts soon. If you’d like to foster kittens for San Luis Obispo County, please e-mail KDCardoza@co.slo.ca.us.

Annie, now 4 months old, still expresses her uncertainty with an occasional hiss and needs a patient adopter who will help her discover the security and joy of being a loved pet.

Not everyone will understand the value of Annie’s affection, but knowing where she started, you’ll cherish every purr.

For more information about Annie (ID No. 239470), call the volunteer line at the Animal Services shelter at 805-781-4400 or visit www.slocounty.ca.gov/aserv. The shelter is located at 885 Oklahoma Ave., off Highway 1, in San Luis Obispo.

The full-price adoption fee is $81 for cats and $115 for dogs, plus a $28 county license fee for dogs, if the adopters are San Luis Obispo County residents.

The adoption fee includes a new collar, a spay or neuter operation, basic vaccinations, a microchip and eligibility for a free veterinary check within San Luis Obispo County. Cats also are tested for feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), and adopters receive a carrier.

HART Cat of the Month

Penelope and her brother Leonardo are the final two remaining siblings that have been at Cambria’s Homeless Animal Rescue Team shelter since they were kittens.

Now, at 5 years old, they still wait for their forever home.

Penelope is March’s Cat of the Month. She would love to go home with her brother, or another cat from our shelter. She has been around cats her entire life and is very comfortable around other felines.

Penelope is a domestic short hair with soft black fur and the sweetest little meow. She is reserved when meeting strangers, but ultimately loves company and is eager to be petted, brushed and played with.

Penelope is considered a special needs kitty because she and her brother Leo have eyelid agenesis, or, under-formed eyelids, and require liquid-tear eye drops two times per day. Penelope needs to be inside only to limit the exposure of dust or debris into her eyes.

Penelope also has pododermatitis, an inflammation of the footpads that cause cracking and pain. Her condition is currently under control with the use of the corticosteroid Prednisone.

Penelope is a beautiful and loving cat who has faced many obstacles in her young life. That has deterred many potential adopters, but her medical needs can be easily managed.

Cats like Penelope deserve a real home with a loving family. Will you please help us find her one?

As Cat of the Month for March, Penelope’s adoption fee is waived.
