SLO County winery wins top award at international wine competition in Texas
A Paso Robles winery brought home the top honors from an international wine competition in Texas this month, beating out 373 other participants.
According to a media release, Hearst Ranch Winery was named the Top All-Around Winery at the 13th annual International Wine Competition at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo in early October.
The winery won numerous other awards at the event, in which a panel of 60 judges selected the best from more than 880 wines entered from across the U.S. and around the world.
Hearst Ranch Winery is a collaboration of Jim Saunders and Steve Hearst.
“It is such an honor to be selected from such a talented group of wineries,” Saunders said of the awards. “And as a fifth-generation Paso Roblean, it is an even greater honor to represent the region on an international platform such as this.”
The winery has been producing vintages from its estate, Saunders Vineyard, for more than 15 years.
Hearst Ranch Winery has tasting rooms at the Paso Robles vineyard and in the historic Old San Simeon Village. The tasting rooms are open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For details, call 805-467-2241 or go to www.hearstranchwinery.com.
The release said that in the San Antonio competition, the winery earned high accolades for all the wines entered, including taking home best-of-show red wine and double gold for its 2019 Proprietor’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
Soren Christensen, the ranch winery’s winemaker, described the winning cab as having “notes of blackcurrants and baking spice” with “beautiful tactile support from finely-grained tannin and resolute acidity.”
