The second annual California Craft Spirits Competition saw “amazing” entries this year, judges said, and several San Luis Obispo County distilleries made an impressive showing.

Liberty Call Distilling of Spring Valley took top honors for its bourbon, earning Best of Show, Best Bourbon and a gold medal at the competition held June 22 at the California Mid-State Fair.

Other class winners were:

Best Rye Whiskey: Re:Find Distillery’s Rye Whiskey (Paso Robles)

Best Vodka: Rocket Works Unflavored Vodka (Truckee)

Best Rum: Calwise Spirits Co. Aged Rum (San Luis Obispo)

Best Liqueur: Opolo Vineyards Herbal/Botanical/Spiced Liqueurs (Paso Robles)

Best Gin: Jewell Distillery Contemporary Gin (Blue Lake)

The quality and range of entries “continue to get better,” chief judge Tim McDonald, president of Napa Valley-based Wine Spoke Here, said in a news release. There were 24 entries this year.
