As the world prepares to watch Matt Damon’s presumably epic performance in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, we can’t help but wonder about the people in his life who helped him get to such a point in his career. A dad to four daughters and married since 2005, this tried-and-true family man has allowed his life and career to be guided by the love he has for his crew.

With The Odyssey hitting the big screen on July 17, Matt Damon recognized the role his family played in bringing this film to life, telling People that “they had to sacrifice a lot too for this.” He continued, “I went away for a while; they came and visited, but it was a lot. It was a very long movie, very grueling shoot, and I’m really excited for my girls to see it tonight.”

It’s Matt’s lovely wife, Luciana Damon, who keeps the family running in his absence, and having been married over 20 years, this duo have found their groove. After an adorable meet-cute, a growing family and years of success on the big screen, Matt and Luciana Damon figured out how to make their marriage work despite the stressors of life in the spotlight. Here, get to know Matt Damon’s wife and what he’s said about her over the years.

How did Matt Damon meet his wife?

Despite the glitz and glamour of his career, Matt didn’t cross paths with Luciana at some ritzy Hollywood party. Instead, in 2003, Luciana was working as a bartender in Miami when Matt—filming the Farrelly movie Stuck on You at the time—stumbled in with the crew. Luciana recalled the story to Vogue Australia, sharing that Matt’s version includes a bright light shining on her, captivating him from across the bar.

“And I’m like, ‘Yeah, it was a nightclub—there were lights everywhere!,” she joked. “But he had started getting recognized and asked for pictures and autographs, and then it got kind of aggressive because people are drinking and stuff, and so he came and hid behind my bar…[wanting to] just hang out back there and have a drink. He says, ‘Oh, I saw you and I really wanted to talk to you.’”

Hanging with Luciana behind the bar, she figured she might as well put him to work! Soon enough, Matt was serving up drinks alongside her, raking in tips from eager fans all night long—and so began their love story.

Matt Damon has worked with his wife

Though Luciana doesn’t have a background in film, she’s played an integral role in his career over the years—even earning a producer credit on his 2024 film The Instigators. Matt initially passed on the movie, but after Casey Affleck showed the script to Matt’s wife, she urged him to pursue it and went on to leave her own unique mark on it.

“She’s been reading every script and watching every cut of every movie for 21 years. This is the first time we ever kind of codified it,” Damontold Entertainment Tonight. “She didn’t even want to take the credit. She was there every day, she was doing all this work on the script, and then she was like, ‘Nah, I don’t want to take the credit.'” He continued, “The other producers on the movie, at the end of the movie—and I had nothing to do with it—they came of their own volition [and said], ‘If you’re not taking credit, we’re not taking credit. [It was] very sweet. She succumbed and took the credit.”

Do Luciana and Matt Damon have kids?

When Matt and Luciana got married, she had a four-year-old daughter from a previous relationship who quickly stole his heart. “I jumped into the deep end with Lucy,” Matt recalled to Paradeback in 2011. “I mean, Alexia was already 4. I was an extra dad. The only way I can describe it—it sounds stupid, but—at the end of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, you know how his heart grows, like, five times its size? Everything is full; it’s just full all the time.”

After marrying in 2005, Matt and Luciana welcomed three more daughters, and the journey of parenthood and marriage has been one he’s enjoyed every second of. “My wife is my soul mate,” he told The Guardianback in 2012. “I can’t imagine being without her. Being a parent, as any parent knows, is a lot of work whether you are together or not. Our 13 year old is terrific, and she’s a big help, but with the other kids it’s just non-stop. We like to do a lot of the family stuff together, particularly when we get them to school in the mornings. It starts at 6.30 a.m. Once you get them off to school there’s always a sigh of relief. Then we have one hour where we can go and get a cup of coffee together.”

After more than 20 years together, Matt and Luciana Damon have built something truly special. From that chance meeting behind a Miami bar to raising four daughters and building careers side by side, they’ve proven that true partnership means showing up for each other every single day.
