'Outlander' Stars Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe Reveal Their Own Theory About Series Ending
The Outlander series finale ended with a gasp (a couple of them ... literally) and a question that even the show's stars can't fully answer.
In the final moments of "And the World Was All Around Us," Jamie Fraser dies at the Battle of Kings Mountain ... and then, just before the screen cuts to black, both Jamie and Claire can be heard drawing breath, suggesting Claire may have used her mysterious healing abilities to save him. Or suggesting something else entirely.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter after watching the finale for the first time just days before it aired, Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe revealed their own theories about what that ending means, and the honest answer is that they're still working it out themselves.
Sam Heughan's Theory on the 'Outlander' Ending
Heughan's interpretation shifts depending on his mood, which, he acknowledged, is perhaps exactly the point.
"Some days I'm like, 'You know what? They live and they go back to Fraser's Ridge, and they live happily ever after,'" he told THR. "But part of me also is suspicious. I think that they are together, but they're somewhere else. They're perhaps in the afterlife, and that might be implied by the standing stone, but they're happy and they're together. I think that's all that matters."
He pointed to a specific detail as potentially significant: the standing stone the lovers are lying on in the final scene - the same stone that has been central to Claire's time-traveling journey throughout the series - is cracked down the middle. "That journey is probably over," Heughan observed. "So maybe they're together alive on Fraser's Ridge, or maybe they're together somewhere else eternally."
He added one more layer: "I think that's why season eight is quite magical. Even the number eight, which is the infinity sign. I think they're together forever."
What Caitríona Balfe Thinks the 'Outlander' Ending Means
Balfe was equally uncertain - and equally moved. She had only seen the finished episode once by the time she spoke to THR, and described herself as "still catching up a little."
"I mean, I would love to know!" she said when asked for her interpretation. "I think it is up for everybody to make their own decision."
Her own feelings about the ending reflect the ambiguity she brought to filming Claire's grief. "I think it is up to the viewer," she said, before offering the clearest statement either star made about what the ending means to them personally. "They're either alive together in this world, or they're together in another world. But ultimately, what is most important is that they're together, wherever they are."
Outlander's series finale is now streaming on Starz.
