This California city is one of America's best ‘antique capitals'
Antiquing is one of the best and most relaxing reasons to road-trip in the U.S.
Aside from learning about history – hmm, is this really Sally Hemings’ pancake skillet? – you have the thrill of potentially uncovering a hidden treasure that will send your kids through college. (Or at least fetch $32 on eBay.)
Like Faberge eggs seeking their level, the country’s heirlooms have clumped up in certain locations. Digital travel magazine Islands has identified some of the best of them for its recent story, "The 10 Best ‘Antique Capitals’ to Shop in America." These sites range from the East Coast to the Midwest to California, and they were selected based on online rankings, YouTube vlogs and popular thrift markets.
Palm Springs made the list for its "multiple antique shopping districts" and outdoor vintage market with "furniture that looks straight off the set of ‘Mad Men,’" Islands. "Check out destinations like Market Market, which spans more than 40,000 square feet and even has a tiki bar at the center," the site advises. "Or check out Sunny Dunes Antique Mall, which is known for its mid-century modern decor and furniture."
