SLO Mama Sweets serves up nostalgic ice cream treats
After Kathy Callahan spent a decade in the wedding industry as a cake baker, she wanted to find a different outlet for her creativity.
A family vacation with her husband, San Luis Obispo city fire captain Matt Callahan, and their three children did the trick.
While visiting Washington, D.C., in the summer of 2013, the Callahan clan spotted a restored Good Humor ice cream truck parked outside one of the Smithsonian Institution museums. That was enough to spark the idea for a business in which the whole family could participate.
After two years of restoring a 1954 vintage ice cream truck found after an exhaustive cross-country search, SLO Mama Sweets was born. Garbed in era-appropriate costumes, the Callahans dole out frozen treats that transport their customers back in time.
Among the iconic offerings are Big Dippers, Bomb Pops, Creamsicles and Big Sticks. Nostalgic It’s Its and Klondike ice cream sandwiches are also available for sale, as are several flavors of ice cream sandwiches made at Batch in San Luis Obispo.
SLO Mama Sweets is available for special events such as weddings or community gatherings.
Prices for individual treats range from approximately $2 to $6.
