Downtown SLO bakery closing after more than 4 years. ‘My forever favorite’

A beloved bakery selling custom cakes, warm pastries and other sweet treats in downtown San Luis Obispo is shutting its doors.

SLO Delicious Bake Shop at 1129 Garden St. announced its closure on its website and Instagram page on Nov. 20.

“We are so beyond grateful to have shared these years with a community that has embraced us and we’ll greatly miss you,” the Instagram post read. “We want to thank our friends, family, customers, and employees for seeing us through this experience.”

The bakery’s Instagram post quickly racked up nearly 700 likes and 190 comments from local residents and business owners saying that they would miss the bakery dearly.

“My forever favorite bakery,” one person wrote. “Thank you for the deserts, laughs and care you brought to Garden Street!”

According to the shop’s website, owner Michael Martineau and chef Gonzalo Huerta first opened the bakery’s engraved glass door on June 30, 2021 — right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In those early years, the pair struggled with “supply chain issues” which brought on delays and high costs, but their “huge leap of faith” in opening the shop brought on a community they wanted to foster, the Instagram post said.

“They just wanted to feel part of a community and provide lasting memories through a great overall experience,” it said. “A place where people would come to get cakes for family celebrations, pastries for the office, or where neighbors and employees downtown would grab lunch.”

The bakery’s last day of operation will be Wednesday, according to the post.

The bakery joins a handful of other recent downtown eatery closures, including Burger Village, which abruptly closed its Higuera Street doors this month, and Proof & Gather bakery which closed in the Network building earlier in the year.
