Cowboy Cookie closes SLO shop after move. Are other locations still open?

A local cookie shop chain has closed its San Luis Obispo location after nearly five decades in business.

Cowboy Cookie & Ice Cream shut its doors at 790 Foothill Blvd., No. 130, in April.

“This location is currently closed,” a sign posted on the store’s front door read. “Please come visit us at our Pismo location.”

As of Thursday, a large “For Lease” sign was pasted on the shop’s door.

Inside, Cowboy Cookie’s menu was still up on the wall but cabinets typically filled with cookies were emptied out.

A freezer chest where tubs of ice cream were once stored had also been completely cleared.

Before moving to Foothill Boulevard, the cookie shop was at 778 Higuera St., Suite A, in downtown San Luis Obispo.

As of Friday, Cowboy Cookie & Ice Cream had not responded to multiple interview requests from The Tribune.

Local cookie shop chain known for rustic, traditional treats

Cowboy Cookies has been churning out sweet treats in SLO since 1979, according to previous Tribune reporting.

Over the years, the business opened up shops in San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach and Santa Maria.

“From the start, our rustic store and traditional cookies became San Luis Obispo’s favorite treats,” Cowboy Cookie said on its website. “Using the same gourmet recipes and the freshest all natural ingredients ... bakers have enticed new cookie enthusiasts and returning loyalists alike.”

What’s on the menu at Cowboy Cookie & Ice Cream?

Cowboy Cookie & Ice Cream is known for its western theme and cookie-centric offerings.

Its menu features at least 10 types of cookies, including chocolate chip, white chocolate macadamia, peanut butter, snickerdoodle and oatmeal rice crispy, according to Cowboy Cookie’s website.

The sweet shop also sells ice cream sandwiches and ice cream cookie cups — bowl-shaped cookies that are filled with scoops of small-batch ice cream.

In a 2019 Tribune article, the “wild, wild west” treats were named one of eight iconic SLO County desserts.

“These cowboy-sized, chewy cookies are sure to satisfy the sweet tooth of even the toughest cowboys,” Tribune staff said at the time.
